Internet Piracy

I would to!

So, after my last post we got a new brilliant idea today from Fred Teeven, State Secretary for Public Safety and Justice.
Mr Teeven had the brilliant idea to make downloading illegal (something which is still legal in The Netherlands) so providers can block sites who serve illegal downloads.
Now I’m not going to rant about deep packet inspection or black/whitelists and how these things would seriously harm privacy. I’m not going to rant about the music industry’s ridiculous pricing schemes.
This post is all about the effects a regulation like that would have on the general public.

The risks of living

Privacy? What?

With the rise of the internet privacy has become a hot topic. A lot has been said about social media sites like Facebook. People sharing their entire life with the world. Most people probably don’t even realize this or just don’t care. I’d love to see those people try a site like pipl.com and then ask them if it’s really such a good idea to keep everything so public.
But this isn’t the kind of privacy i want to talk about in this post. I want to talk about governments and privacy.

How To: Making Gold With Jewelcrafting

RL Gold

Time to write a bit more about one of my favorite things in World of Warcraft, making gold.
If you’re interested in this you might want to check out the post I did a few months ago about Inscription.
That still works as well even though I didn’t expect it to do that well after the changes made going in to cataclysm. The Darkmoon Cards do help a lot.
Anyway, on to jewelcrafting!

Airport Laptop Screening

AirportSecurity

So this came up last week again and I just couldn’t help but wonder why they make such a fuzz about data stored on laptops or other data carriers.
Sure, you could be bringing all kinds of naughty stuff into the country but anyone who has really something to hide will either encrypt it or simply download it once they get to their destination.

Scraping the Word of Warcraft Armory

graph

Time to combine two of my hobbies, World of Warcraft and programming.
A while ago I worked on an armory scraper / crawler that’s able to parse the WoW Armory XML.
Why do you ask? Well I just really like numbers and statistics. And I’m sure there’s lots of interesting stuff to find if you can search the armory with your own queries and create nice overviews and graphs (everyone loves graphs!).
